Aurora youth hone baseball skills at free training camp
AURORA, Ill., May 3, 2021 — Play ball! That was the theme of 11th annual Aurora Islanders’ youth baseball camp Saturday, May 1, at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Aurora.
Despite windy conditions, about 30 boys and girls ages 6 to 12 years old participated in T-ball and baseball drills. Coaches for the free morning camp were volunteers from the Islanders, an Aurora-based senior amateur baseball club.
Campers received instruction in fundamentals of batting, throwing, catching, fielding and baserunning. Tennis balls substituted for baseballs for T-ball students. Bottled water and donated equipment were available on request.
A lunch of hotdogs, chips, cookies concluded the training.
At the camp, Wayside Cross Ministries of Aurora registered campers for its free summer Aurora Neighborhood Baseball League at MLK Park. Included are T-ball and baseball games. T-ball, for ages 6-8, is played on Saturday mornings. Players receive a free jersey and hat.
Baseball games, for ages 9-12, are scheduled on Saturdays and a weekday. Practices are held weekly. Players receive a free cap, jersey, pants and socks. Gloves are available on request.
Team practices started May 3 for the season from May 22 to mid July. To sign up, or for more information, call Abby Gonzalez at (630) 723-3421 or e-mail agonzalez@waysidecross.org.
