Aurora literacy center to offer citizenship classes

AURORA, Ill., Jan. 12, 2020—Free citizenship classes will be offered February through April by the Dominican Literacy Center of Aurora.

Male and female students are invited. Parking and instruction are free at St. Mary’s Church parish center, 432 E. Downer Place in Aurora. A $10 donation is requested for study materials.

Starting Feb. 3, classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays to April.

According to Sister Jane Ann Beckman, an instructor, classes will prepare students to pass a written citizenship test of 100 civics questions and an English test covering reading, writing and speaking skills.

Advance registration is not required.

Founded in 1993, the nonprofit literacy center is operated by Dominican sisters. Its mission is to enable immigrant families to participate in their communities by learning to read, write and speak English and pass the U.S. citizenship test.

The center has served thousands of Aurora area residents with free, one-on-one English classes for women by volunteer mentors and citizenship classes for both men and women.

The center has grown from five students and five teachers, to 200 students from 16 countries taught by 200 dedicated volunteer tutors.
