Philemon continues Aurora Methodists' sermon series on Bible's lesser known books
Oswego pastor Roger Jenks recounts Esther moment
Feb. 17, 2019, AURORA, Ill. — Philemon, a lesser know Bible book, will be explored Sunday, Feb. 24, at Flowing Forth United Methodist Church in Aurora. The church holds worship services at 10 a.m. at Aurora Christian School, 2255 Sullivan Rd. in Aurora.
The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.
Rev. Derek Rogers, Flowing Forth UMC pastor, said Philemon will be the third of four sermons in his February-March series titled titled “Small but Mighty.“ The series concludes Sunday, March 3, with “Titus.” Rev. Rogers said, “We are looking at the small books of the Bible, the stories that take up just a few pages. “These are books that we may have never heard of or even read. Typically we skip past them to get to the seemingly bigger, more important stories instead,” Rev. Rogers said.
On Sunday, Feb. 17, Oswego resident Rev. Roger Jenks spoke on “Esther” as guest preacher at Flowing Forth. Rev. Jenks, a retired Disciples of Christ pastor, is a church consultant.
He recounted how Esther, a Jewish orphan woman, the lowest in social standing, won a bachelor-style contest to become a queen of Persia. When asked by her cousin Mordecai to request mercy from the king for the Jews, Esther overcomes fear of death to do what was right.
Rev. Jenks recalled his personal “Esther moment” when he came upon a truck driver who crashed in a ditch. Stopping to assist with some hesitation, Rev. Jenks comforted the victim and then hailed a passing motorist who happened to be a medical doctor. The physician treated the victim at the scene before being transported to a hospital for recovery.
Rev. Rogers suggested three small but mighty acts of kindness:
–Write someone to tell how they’ve impacted your life.
–Pay for the person behind you at the drive through.
–Do a favor without asking for anything in return.
