Annual tradition of lighting Advent candles

Advent season has begun…

Louis Lipsey, 8, of Aurora, lights Advent-season candles Sunday at Flowing Forth United Methodist Church in Aurora. From left are grandparents Roger and Linda Spurgin of Aurora. During Advent, the month leading up to Christmas, Flowing Forth chooses one family each week to light candles representing Jesus’ virtues of hope, love, joy and peace. The Advent wreath includes four purple candles and a larger white candle in the middle called the Christ candle. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world. (Al Benson photo)
