Hands-on actions to highlight Aurora Methodists’ ‘Journey to the Cross’

AURORA, Ill., March 31, 2021 — “Journey to the Cross,” 12 stations with hands-on action exercises, will highlight Holy Week at Flowing Forth United Methodist Church in Aurora from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 2. The church meets at Aurora Christian Schools theater, 2255 Sullivan Rd. in Aurora.

The public is invited said the Rev. Derek Rogers, Flowing Forth pastor. Admission and parking are free. The week preceding Easter Sunday, Holy Week began with Palm Sunday, March 28, and ends with Holy Saturday, April 3.

The self-guided “Journey” chronicles Jesus’ last week of life with stations for reflection, prayer and action exercises.

The Rev. Rogers adapted the presentation from one by Level Ground Mennonite Church. He will be on hand to answer questions.

Stations are “The Beginning,” “The Fall,” “The Garden,” “Betrayed,” “Condemned,” “Denied,” “Whipped,” “Nailed,” “It is Finished,” “Buried,” “Amazing Grace” and “Communion.”

Action exercises include:

–On a sticky note, write down good things created by God and paste note on  a world map at the station.

–Kneel down on a cushion, or stand with head bowed, as an act of submission and humility.

–Select and carry a stone to represent sin.

–Wash hands with sanitizer to symbolize how Roman governor Pontius Pilate washed his hands after giving Jesus into the crowd’s cries to crucify Jesus.

–Dump coins from a bag onto a table, count them, return them back to the bag (Disciple Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.)

–With a red marker, strike clothing hanging from a cross.

–Write down “I don’t know the man” on a note board to symbolize denial of Christ with words, actions, or non-action.

–Extinguish a candle as a symbol of Jesus dying.

–Hammer a nail into a piece of wood.

–Drop carried rock in buckets of water to represent sin dying with Christ.

–At last station, a table symbolizing Jesus’ last supper, eat and drink prepackaged communion elements.
