Retired Aurora police chief takes trophy at Habitat show
AURORA, Ill., July 25, 2020 — Bill Powell, retired Aurora police chief, was among best-of-show trophy winners at Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity’s first car show Saturday, July 25, at Habitat’s new west Aurora ReStore.
Powell’s 1972 Chevrolet C-10 won Best of Show-Truck honors. A 1959 Cadillac displayed by Rosemary and Anthony Vitusa of Westchester took Best of Show-Car honors. More than 50 exhibitors voted 22 awards for fellow gearheads’ vehicles.
Plano-based Carousel Sound coordinated the show. In addition to vintage to contemporary vehicles, the show featured kids’ games, raffle baskets, a 50-50 raffle and refreshments.
The public was invited. Admission and parking were free.
Habitat’s ReStore, offering new and gently used home goods including flooring, tools, building materials and appliances, is scheduled to open Sept. 25 at 2302 W. Indian Trail in Aurora.
The opening celebration will include an 11 a.m. raffle drawing for a mint-condition 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. Barbara Zegiel, Habitat funds coordinator, said the blue classic was donated by an anonymous man “…who wants us to raise money for the new ReStore.“
Donations to stock the ReStore are invited. Barbara Zegiel, Habitat funds coordinator, said donations can be dropped off on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Porch or garage pickup of donations is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call (630) 206-5038.
Founded in 1988, Fox Valley Habitat is a nondenominational Christian housing ministry based at Genesis Community Church in Montgomery. Since its inception, Habitat has helped 278 local people and 69 families obtain housing in the Fox Valley. Habitat partners with residents in need of affordable shelter by building new homes with the recipients contributing a major sweat-equity investment.
Habitat’s current project, a duplex sponsored by area realtors and others, is underway at 829-831 Grove St. in Aurora. In addition to offices at Genesis, Habitat maintains a warehouse at 250 S. Highland Ave. in Aurora. Fox Valley Habitat is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an international Christian housing ministry.
